New Buick Envision Gets 5-Star Safety Rating

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a federal agency dedicated to ranking cars based on their safety. Buick has achieved a top five-star safety rating across the lineup for the past two years. The 2017 Buick Envision crossover continues that trend with a top safety score for the model year.

The new Buick Envision earned a top five-star safety rating thanks to its durable design and incredible number of safety technologies. Drivers interested in the Envision will be met with a long list of standard and available features that add up to five cameras, 13 sensors, and peace of mind behind the wheel

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety backs the NHTSA’s rating with one of its own. The crossover had earned the top rating for 2016 and now that’s extended into the current year. The institute named the new Buick Envision a Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with HID headlights and available front crash prevention technologies.

The IIHS requires vehicles to earn Good ratings in all crash tests as well as an Advanced or Superior rating in the front crash prevention test. Vehicles must also earn a Good or Acceptable headlight rating.

We here at Red Wing Chevrolet couldn’t be happier with the Buick Envision’s safety rating!

Benefits of Different Drivetrains: FWD vs 4WD vs AWD

All-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive—what do these mean exactly, and what are the benefits of each? These represent different kinds of drivetrains, which are what connect the transmission to the drive axles and deliver power.

For front- and rear-wheel drive, this means that the power is delivered only to two of the tires, with the other two just following suit. Front-wheel drive, or FWD, is great for drivers who live in climates that don’t get huge amounts of snowfall and who drive smaller cars like sedans, which rarely come with AWD systems. Rear-wheel drive, or RWD, typically offers better performance and is therefore popular in sports cars, but it doesn’t perform very well in bad weather conditions.

When it comes to AWD and 4WD, the difference can be tricky to understand, since both involve power being delivered to all four wheels. In AWD systems, which are common in SUVs, the system is always active and determines which wheels to send power to based on how sensors read the environment. On the other hand, 4WD, also known as 4×4, only engages when you tell it to and delivers power to all four wheels at the same time.

Though they’re not all that dissimilar, they’re made for very different purposes. AWD is a great standard drivetrain for people who live in areas with extreme weather conditions, and 4WD is mostly activated for off-roading purposes in mud, through forests, on sand, et cetera. If you don’t plan on going off-roading for fun, AWD or FWD is probably best for you.

2017 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport Pricing and Details Announced

On Friday April 29, Chevy announced the pricing and a number of details about the 2017 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport, which is set to go on sale this summer. The Grand Sport coupe will start at $66,445, while the convertible will be priced at $70,445, not titling and other fees.

First released in 1963 and designed by the Corvette’s first engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Corvette Grand Sport is the purest racing form of the Corvette. The product marketing manager of the Corvette, Harlan Charles, said the new Grand Sport is “a worthy successor to the spirit of the originals,” given its higher degree of driver involvement and better capabilities on top of the Corvette’s formidable basis.

Chevy says the new Corvette Grand Sport will be able to go from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds, and with its lightweight build, specially designed aerodynamics, and other features designed to improve handling, the Grand Sport will have an incredibly tight turn cornering capability. The Grand Sport will also be offered with the Z07 package, which will allow it to reach 60 mph in less than 100 feet.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Leads Segment in Efficiency

Red Wing, MN April 6, 2016 – Offering a segment-best EPA-estimated 46-mpg combined fuel economy rating, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is an efficient midsize sedan driving Chevrolet into the future with uncompromising comfort, connectivity and driving dynamics.

It leverages drive system components and software from the plug-in Chevrolet Volt to provide all-electric propulsion in some driving scenarios, along with power to assist the gas engine. Additional technologies contribute to EPA-estimated mileage ratings of 47 mpg city and 46 mpg highway. No other 2016 midsize sedan hybrid offers Red Wing, MN-area customers higher EPA-estimated city mileage.

“This world-class hybrid will deliver exceptional efficiency with a sleek design and easy-to-use technologies that our customers will appreciate,” said Brad Banitt, GM of Red Wing Chevrolet.

The 2016 Malibu Hybrid starts at $28,645 (including destination charge) and is based on the LT trim. It shares many of its attributes with the entire Malibu lineup, which was redesigned for 2016 and features a longer wheelbase for greater comfort. It is also nearly 300 pounds lighter than its predecessor for improved driving feel and greater fuel economy.

Red Wing, MN-area customers will find that standard features include Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, for high-level connectivity, and access to select phone apps such as music, maps and others right from MyLink’s 7-inch-diagonal color touch screen. (Data plan rates and privacy statements apply and require a compatible smartphone.)

Malibu Hybrid offers Red Wing area customers 10 standard airbags, a rear-vision camera, cruise control and push-button start with passive entry. Additional active safety features offered include Lane Keep Assist, Front Pedestrian Braking, Rear Vision Camera and Low Speed Automatic Braking.

Teen Driver is available and allows Red Wing, MN-area parents to automatically activate safety features and view their teenager’s driving habits, while managing certain settings including speed warnings, radio volume limits and more, to help reinforce safe driving. It is the first system in the industry to allow parents to view how their teen drove the vehicle via the in-vehicle report card.

Hybrid details

The 2016 Malibu Hybrid is driven by a new, direct-injected 1.8L engine mated to a two-motor drive unit. The drive unit is based on the one used in the 2016 Chevrolet Volt and provides additional power to assist the engine during acceleration, for 182 horsepower (136 kW) of total system power.

The engine also features Chevrolet’s first application of Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery, or EGHR, technology, which uses exhaust heat to warm the engine and cabin. EGHR improves engine warm-up and helps offer consistent fuel economy performance in cold weather. Additional fuel economy benefits come from Exhaust Gas Recirculation, or EGR.

An 80-cell, 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides electric power to the hybrid system. It can power the Malibu Hybrid up to 53 miles per hour (85 km/h) on electricity alone. The gasoline-powered engine automatically comes on at higher speeds and high loads to provide additional power.

In addition to the drive unit, the Malibu Hybrid also shares the 2016 Volt’s blended regenerative braking system, which provides maximum kinetic energy recovery during braking to be stored in the battery system to help maintain charge.
